Cans, Tins and Metal
Drink and food tins and cans and any metal items should all be recycled, whether they are made from ferrous or non-ferrous metals.
We have glass, metal and plastic recycling bins in the school and throughout Colstoun. Please ensure that you put the following items in these bins:
-
Food and drink cans
-
Food and drink tins
-
Tin foil and metal wrapping.
These bins are emptied into the main recycling bin once a week by the cleaning staff.
If possible please was the items before placing them in the bins, however this is not necessary as all recycling is cleaned at the recycling plant regardless of how clean it is previously.
Its important to recycle metals as they can be reused indefinitely without impacting their structural integrity.
If you have a large collection of food tins please check with the florists or gardeners whether they can be reused for potting up seedlings and bringing on plants.
Cardboard, Paper, and paper products
Please put all clean Cardboard and Paper into the bins marked 'Paper Recycling'. These bins are emptied once a week, the cardboard and paper is shredded and used for bedding for the ducks and chickens. This is then mixed through the Ridan Composter. Waxed paper and paper with food on it cannot be recycled this way and where possible should be shredded by hand and put in the compost bins. Please help the recycling team by removing any staples or tape from your paper and cardboard as this is dangerous for the ducks and chickens.
CDs and DVDs
CDs and DVDs cannot be recycled in East Lothian at the moment, please give them to the gardener, or leave them in Pyrus' Studio so that they can be used to scare birds away from the crops in the walled garden.
